History

The railway originally served Bury Bolton Street which is now the Bury railway station of the East Lancashire Railway. The railway between Manchester and Bury Interchange was redeveloped in the early 1990s to become part of the Manchester Metrolink network, forming the northern terminus. The interchange is managed by TfGM and has recently been refurbished, improving facilities and security for passengers.[1]

In 1994, pensioner Shirley Leach was murdered at the interchange on her way home from visiting her sick daughter in hospital. Despite the case going cold, DNA evidence finally convicted her killer in 2006.[2]

Metrolink services

Between 0715-1900 Monday-Friday and 0930-1800 Saturday, Metrolink services depart every 12 minutes towards Altrincham and Piccadilly[3]. These two 12 minute services give passengers a 6 minute frequency from Bury via all stops to Market Street. During the early mornings, evenings, on Sundays and Bank Holidays, a 12 minute service to Piccadilly operates, with Passengers wishing to travel on the Altrincham and Eccles lines required to change at Piccadilly Gardens. The interchange lies in Metrolink ticketing zone A.

Bus services

The majority of services are run by First Manchester and Rossendalebus with the remainder of services run by Arriva North West, Maytree Travel, Stotts and Transdev Burnley and Pendle.

There are frequent buses running to Manchester, Rochdale, Bolton, Middleton and Rawtenstall plus several parts of the Bury area including Heywood, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom and Tottington. Buses also run from Bury to Accrington, Bacup and Burnley.
